Generosity Sunday November 15

Generosity Sunday

FIT_at_Wellshire_web_bannerPlease join us in worship on Sunday November 15 for Generosity Sunday; Dr. Bell preaches on Philippians 4:4-14. Please note that both services will be in the Sanctuary. The annual Wellshire tradition of Generosity Sunday gives individuals in the Wellshire community the opportunity to pledge their financial commitment for the upcoming year during worship. Please prayerfully consider how you can practice the spiritual discipline of giving, which undergirds the ministries critical to Wellshire’s work as the hands and feet of Christ – we can’t do it without you![clear]

“We all devote our time, work energy, and money to that which is important to us. Increased giving each year has strengthened my faith and my bond with my church family. Financial Peace University has enlightened me to the concept of giving a tithe and offerings — not a tithe or offerings. Rev. John Bell has pointed out that generosity to our church — the Body of Christ — is having a religious as well as a spiritual experience.  I feel it!”

Mutonganavo is a minister in the Presbytery of Zimbabwe and visited Colorado as a delegate within the Partnership of Zimbabwe and Denver Presbyteries (PZDP), which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Cycling Festival To Benefit Orphans In Zimbabwe

Team Wellshire riders at Elephant Rock, 2015Thank You Wellshire!

A big thank you for supporting Team Wellshire and, through it, the orphans at the Heather Chimhoga Orphan Center in rural Murewea, Zimbabwe.  On June 7, Team Wellshire riders rode in the Elephant Rock Cycling Festival in Castle Rock as a part of Team Zimbabwe.  Their participation and the generous financial contributions from Wellshire members and friends garnered $11,120 for the Denver Presbytery-wide Zimbabwe Mission Partnership, of which Wellshire is a partner church.  The entire 2015 Team Zimbabwe effort has raised $43,000 and had 100 riders!  This event raises almost half of the annual budget for the orphan center, which provides for the daily care for 1,000 orphans.

The ZMP is  comprised of 12 churches, including Wellshire. The sole focus of this 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is the support and development of the Heather Chimhoga Orphan Center in rural Murewea, Zimbabwe.

Team_Zimbabwe_imageEvery year, these 12 Presbyterian churches rally to form Team Zimbabwe, a group of cyclists who ride in the Elephant Rock Cycling Festival in Castle Rock. Team Wellshire returns as a subset of Team Zimbabwe and an activity of Wellshire Recreation Ministry to raise funds for the orphans and create community through play!

If you’d like to contribute financially, please do so at your earliest convenience. Click here to make a donation to Team Wellshire online. Or write a check for any amount to Wellshire Church (memo: “Team Wellshire”).

Dr. Bell on Changes to the PCUSA Constitution

Presbyterian Church USA logo

PCUSA LogoDr. Bell’s remarks on the recently ratified amendment to the PCUSA constitution regarding same-sex marriage:

Dear Wellshire Church,

As I reported in worship a few weeks ago, a majority of presbyteries across the country recently ratified a proposed amendment to the PCUSA constitution redefining marriage from “a man and a woman” to simply “two people, traditionally a man and a woman.” With this change, now, PCUSA pastors and churches are free to perform same-sex marriage in Colorado, because it’s also now legal in Colorado.

Sensing this change was coming, the elders that serve on your Session at Wellshire have been studying, discussing and praying about this issue for the past several months. Last week Session unanimously voted to allow and support same-sex weddings at Wellshire Presbyterian Church. I should also add that your three ordained and installed pastors strongly support this decision. The Session wants to send a clear message that Wellshire welcomes LGBT people into the full life of the church.

Recognizing that there are opposing viewpoints on this subject, Session is also actively making plans for education on this issue and discussion this fall. Specifically, we will offer a study class on Mark Achtemeier’s book The Bible’s YES to Same-Sex Marriage: An Evangelical’s Change of Heart.

Let me briefly here repeat what I said in worship a few weeks ago:

First, Wellshire strives to be a “Big Tent” church that respects diversity and inclusiveness. We value liberals and conservatives, rich and poor, educated and simple folk, urbanites and suburbanites, black and white, Democrats and Republicans, Americans and persons of foreign descent. We believe reasonable people will disagree. If you disagree with this decision, it is my earnest desire and Session’s hope that you will remain an active member of this congregation, respecting those with whom you disagree, as others offer the same respect to you. In these polarized times, it is imperative that Christians strive for unity to preserve our witness and illustrate the love of Jesus Christ for all.

Second, some who oppose this decision contend that the denomination has chosen a position that is in direct contrast to the teaching of the Bible. The implication is that we are being unfaithful or apostate, choosing “the way of the world” over clear Biblical teaching. This, to me, is false and outrageous. As Protestants, we must hold the Bible up as our sole authority. No one is suggesting otherwise, but I, for one, do NOT believe that the Bible is clearly opposed to same sex marriage or homosexuality within a committed, loving, Christian framework. Please withhold judgment of “what the Bible says” until you have heard and prayerfully considered the many interpretations that exist within the Bible.

And, third, a very high and increasingly higher percentage of Americans under the age of 40 understand this to be a civil rights issue, which means this is almost certainly going the same way as slavery and women’s rights. As controversial as this decision may be today, it is on the right side of history, and, when those of us who are still alive look back 50 years from now, we will be proud of this bold step.

Greg Allen-Pickett Chapel Presentation

Greg Allen-Pickett

Greg Allen-PickettGreg Allen-Pickett, General Manager of Presbyterian World Mission, traveled to Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq with Moderator Heath Rada in Fall 2014.  The purpose of the visit was to stand in solidarity with our church partners in those countries.  They sat with people displaced by violence, both from the Syrian Civil War and from ISIS.  They assessed the needs to be able to provide relief and assistance.  And together with our global church partners they prayed for God’s peace to reign in the region.  On Sunday, April 12 at 9:55 am in the Chapel, Greg will share stories of despair and hope from this trip, stories of our Christian brothers and sisters in Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq.
